The Education department of the AIDS Committee of Ottawa works to reduce the spread of HIV and to manage its impact.

This is done through:

  • Health Promotion activities:: Health promotion information to people living with HIV/AIDS is made available through various information forums and a resource centre. Resource materials such as videos, books, journals and other sources of information related to HIV/AIDS issues are available on loan.

  • Speaker’s Bureau:: The Speaker's Bureau helps people in our community understand some of the psycho-social, emotional and practical day-to-day impacts that HIV/AIDS has on people living with this disease. Our hope is that testimonials by our speakers will help to decrease stigma and increase awareness of how HIV effects us all.

  • HIV 101:: Presentations that educate participants about HIV transmission, disease progression, social impacts etc.

  • HIV prevention presentations:: Educating participants about safer sex practices, safer injection drug use practices as well as universal precautions.

  • "Train the Trainer":: HIV "Train the Trainer" is a two-day workshop geared towards frontline workers. It provides tools and techniques.

  • Needle Exchange and Crack Pipe Distribution Program:: To reduce the spread of HIV, the Program exchanges new needles for used needles and distributes free condoms.

  • Other resource materials

  • Mail-outs

  • Safer-sex kits
